Gdynia Design Days - maybe seaside in the capital city?
The time to sum up.
Gdynia Design Days 2012 Project (Warsaw edition) "maybe seaside in the capital city?" came to an end and the time to sum up has arrived. What was it for us? A urban festival? Festival of designing? Also. Yet, it mostly was the festival of great experimenting.
We created the first urban festival that not only presented the trends of designers from Poland and Eastern Europe but also created a platform of collaboration between two great urban centres - Gdynia and Warsaw. The classic relation designer-curator, designer-employer expanded into new ways of communication. We initiated the discussuion on the common urban space, the fate of dwellers, or the differences between the needs and the dreams. We dared to ask questions about the future and the quality of the common urban space.
This project has made us aware of the urging need to collaborate and it has also showed that we lose touch with our own environment. This initiates new tasks not only for the designer but also for the city hall, local authorities, and first and foremost for the dwellers. We learn from each other.
Gdynia is one of the friendliest cities in Poland and for the last five years it has been organizing summer design festival for its inhabitants as well as for the tourists who stay there. Łódź has been doing the same thing for the last six years. There is also Poznań, Cieszyn. And we keep our fingers crossed for Kielce. What about our capital city? Now we can rest easy about it. Our 3-million methropolis is the biggest Polish city and is commonly called a dormitory city for those who at weekends go back to their home towns. All this contributes to great contrasts and makes the organization of such festival a great challenge. This city ostensibly divides instead of combining, yet only ostensibly. We - the organizers, curators, and designers are led by the same idea. The Warsaw edition of Gdynia Design Days "maybe seaside in the city?" has proven that the capital city together with its institutuions and centres of culture feels this urging need to be open to new phenomenons and experiments. We are trying to get to know our own needs and we are ready to suggest multiple solutions and projects within the public sector. Space is what we experiment with. To be honest the strongest point of the Warsaw edition was the venue. Post-industrial buildings of Soho Factory at Miska 25 in Warsaw Praga gave completely new look for the exhibits from Gdynia. The presented exhibitions: "Pretty country," "Wykonane w Polsce" (en.Made in Poland), "God, Humour, Homeland. Russian designing" but also an open air exhibition called "Handy items, widgets, and all others thingamabobs. 1939-89 Poles' home inventions". Warsaw people got acquainted with the repertoire of the Transatlantyk Jan AP Kaczmarek Festival, which was presented in the Bałtyk Cinema on the Vox beds. We could also host Oskar Zieta with his exhibition "Every Object Tells A Story" and a project RedDot prepared by Sitag. A lot went on.
Soho Factory together with radically transforming space of Praga are an excellent example of a wise revamp and collaboration with our native designers and artists. This year's first edition unveils new creative concepts and opens new gates towards new fields to be discussed.
It may sound strange but we, the curators of "maybe seaside in the capital city?" who were born and live in Warsaw, we made ourselves comfortable here and now also in Soho Factory. We will boast of our city, and the achievements of our artists and our hosts. We hope that it will become the fixed event of the long term agenda of the capital city events. We count on you.
We can already invite you to Gdynia in July for the VI edition of Gdynia Design Days festival.
